Jamelle Jones Targets Knockout Against Khabib Nabiev at PFL New York

Jamelle Jones is returning to the Professional Fighters League with no interest in playing the role of a stepping stone.

Nearly five years after his previous PFL run, “The Beast” will face undefeated Russian prospect Khabib Nabiev in a light heavyweight bout at PFL New York on July 31. The event takes place at UBS Arena on Long Island and airs live on ESPN.

Nabiev enters the matchup with a perfect 12-0 record, a pressure-heavy style developed in Dagestan and Khabib Nurmagomedov expected in his corner. Jones, however, sees those details as reasons to embrace the matchup rather than fear it.

Back where he believes he belongs

Jones went 1-2 during his first stint with the PFL, competing exclusively at heavyweight despite believing his natural home was at 205 pounds.

His first victory with the promotion propelled him directly into its heavyweight playoff tournament. The opportunity arrived faster than he anticipated and placed him among the division’s top contenders almost immediately.

Jones does not describe his return as an opportunity to settle unfinished business. Instead, the 37-year-old views it as confirmation that he has earned another chance to compete at the sport’s highest levels.

The road back was far from straightforward. Jones struggled to find regional opportunities that made financial sense after leaving the PFL. Rather than accept fights for purses he believed did not reflect his experience or value, he returned to work while remaining in the gym.

During the winters, Jones drove a snowplow. Away from work and training, he assumed the role of primary caregiver for his young son while his wife worked long hours as a retail manager.

That lifestyle allowed Jones to remain prepared even when meaningful opportunities were scarce.

“Ain’t nothing safe about me”

Jones now returns against an opponent who has yet to experience defeat as a professional.

Nabiev has finished more than 80% of his victories, while Jones has earned 13 of his 15 professional wins inside the distance. With both fighters carrying significant finishing ability, Jones does not expect their meeting to become a cautious tactical affair—at least not if he can dictate its tone.

That contrast could define the matchup. Nabiev will attempt to impose his calculated pressure and wrestling, while Jones wants to force the undefeated prospect into an uncomfortable and unpredictable fight.

Jones enters with nearly twice as many professional appearances as his opponent. His 15-8 record includes fights against UFC veterans and established PFL contenders, along with experience competing through injuries and on short notice.

Nabiev may possess the unbeaten record and considerable attention surrounding his team, but Jones believes the experience gap will become especially important if the fight moves beyond the type of controlled contest Nabiev prefers.

A chance to enter the PFL rankings

PFL has moved away from the season-and-playoff structure that defined Jones’ first run with the promotion, adopting a more conventional rankings-based format.

Jones recognizes that the new system could bring its own political challenges. His immediate objective, however, is simple: defeat Nabiev, enter the light heavyweight rankings and determine what comes next from there.

Although Jones respects current PFL light heavyweight champion Corey Anderson—a fellow New Jersey native with whom he has previously trained—he is not looking beyond the opponent directly in front of him.

For Jones, the fight represents more than a return to a familiar promotion. It is an opportunity to resume a career that never truly stopped, even while he was working, raising his son and waiting for an offer worthy of accepting.

When the cage door closes at PFL New York, he promises that the undefeated Nabiev will not receive a comfortable welcome.

PFL New York takes place Friday, July 31, at UBS Arena in Belmont Park, New York. The card is headlined by PFL lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov defending his title against Archie Colgan and airs live on ESPN beginning at 7 p.m. ET.
